The organizations came together with a vision to ensure that EVERY fork gets to transport healthy, good quality foods to every mouth.
What happens when we combine the determination of the food justice movement with the resilience of people who fight for the rights of the hungry and homeless? We get a coalition called Farm to Every Fork (F2EF). The organizations behind this coalition came together with a passionate vision to ensure that EVERY fork gets to transport healthy, good quality foods to every mouth. Period.
Farm to Every Fork is embodied by Slow Food Sacramento; Sacramento Homeless Organizing Committee (SHOC); Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services; River City Food Bank; Food Not Bombs; and several local urban farms. F2EF strives to acknowledge, support and spread awareness about the importance of food equality to ensure everyone has an opportunity to lead healthy lives.
"We are what we eat from our head down to our feet," said Brother Kevin Carter, F2EF member.
Their first effort to raise awareness is a gala dinner on September 13. Each $150 ticket funds two dinners: one for the ticket holder and one for an invited guest who has experienced food insecurity. The coalition is bringing together people from the community who would not likely share the same table with the purpose of empowering everyone to spark dialogue and broadening a commitment to end malnutrition and hunger in the region.
"We'll break bread together, share stories and understand better the challenges facing those who are struggling with the cost of food," said Paula Lomazzi of SHOC.
Dinner will be prepared with superior ingredients from local farms by Chefs Michael Thiemann and Matt Masera of restaurants, Mother and Empress Tavern.
Funds from the dinner will benefit the Sacramento Homeless Organizing Committee/Homeward Street Journal; Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services; River City Food Bank; Food Not Bombs; and The Fund for Urban Gardens.
The goal of the Farm to Every Fork coalition is to broaden and strengthen the network of individuals and entities addressing the challenges of hunger and homelessness in Sacramento. Contact them to find out how you can get involved.
